Understanding A Few Different Kinds Of Plumbing Leaks

As a homeowner, you likely understand that plumbing leaks are serious issues that can cause a great deal of damage. However, not all leaks are the same. In fact, there are three types of leaks that you need to watch out for. Keep reading to learn about two of them and also how they may be fixed.

Gusher Leaks

Gusher leaks are the most serious and refer to leaks that develop when cracks or holes form in the water supply lines. These leaks are typically caused by a few specific things. They develop when the pipe bursts or splits. Also, when a soldered fitting comes loose or separates or the line is cut, a gusher can form.

Gushers are the most obvious leaks that present with water flooding, water spraying or gushing noises, and possible wetting of the floors. These leaks require immediate attention with water shut off completely at the main line. Also, a pipe replacement will be required. Depending on the extent of the damage, a small cut in the pipe may be all that is required and a small section can be replaced with push fittings. However, joint leaks, larger leaking pipe sections, and multiple burst pipes may require a more lengthy replacement.

Drip Or Pinhole Leaks

On the other end of the spectrum, you may have a plumbing leak that is not that noticeable. This is an issue you may experience with pinhole leaks where  water releases from water pipes through small holes that are about the size of a pin head. These types of leaks are slow ones that allow water to build on the outside of the pipe. This looks a lot like condensation. Pinhole leaks do not cause a lot of damage, but they can be the cause of mold issues in the home. Also, pinhole leaks are a sign of overall pipe damage due to age or weakness.

Pinhole leaks can be hard to identify, but they should be located and examined. While the rate of leaking water may be quite slow, the issue can indicate an overall corrosion or pipe weakness issue. Addressing the problem early can reduce the risk of a major pipe bursting issue in the future.

There are several methods that your plumber company such as Johns Plumbing INC can use to find pinhole leaks. In general, dimpled pipes that appear with a green patina on the exterior are the ones that likely contain the leaks. These pipes may also show signs of wear as if the copper has been stressed.
