Need More Hot Water For A Shower? Know Your Options

Do you find yourself frustrated with how hot your water gets when you want to take a shower? Does it take an incredibly long time for the hot water to start coming out of the shower head once you turn it on? If so, you're wasting gallons of water every day that is going right down the drain. You may want to consider an upgrade to your plumbing that will give you instant hot water as soon as you are ready to jump in. Here are a few options for getting this job done.

Recirculating Water System

A recirculating water system has a constant flow of hot water within your home. Imagine a pipe that travels to and from your water heater that is always moving hot water and each fixture that uses hot water taps into that pipe. It ensures that the water near your water fixture is always hot and ready to go as soon as the faucet is opened.

A recirculating water system works by placing a pump at the point in your home that is the farthest from your water heater. A thermostat regulates how hot the water temperature is at this point, and adjusts it accordingly. Since the system ensures hot water at the farthest distance from your water heater, all other faucets in your home see the same benefits.

While these systems do use energy when the water is not in use, it can be regulated by turning it on and off. Many homeowners shut off the system when they are leaving on vacation, or schedule it to shut off during working hours or when they are asleep.

Tankless Water Heater

You can also replace your old water heater with a tankless model. These units do not store a tank of hot water that is ready to go but heat the water on demand as you use it. The advantage of these systems is that they are very energy efficient, but they can struggle with supplying hot water to multiple faucets in your home.

This is why it is best to use a tankless water heater when you have a single bathroom in your home, and there is no competition for hot water at the same time. There are more powerful units that can supply hot water to multiple bathrooms, but it will be more expensive to purchase.
