How To Deal With An Emergency Plumbing Leak Situation

There are certain situations in the home that may be considered an emergency, and this includes plumbing situations where water is leaking or spraying all over your home. In this scenario, you will need to move quickly and contact a plumbing professional who can make a timely repair for you. Before you do this though, there are a few things you will need to do first to ensure that that you are able to contain the disaster.

Turn Off The Water

The first thing you should always do in a plumbing emergency that involves a serious leak is to turn off the water at the main valve. However, if you notice that water has infiltrated your electrical panel in your basement then you will need to contact your electric company first to shut off the electricity. Do not approach the breaker panel or you may electrocute yourself.

If you are able to approach the main shutoff safely, then turn the valve to the off position. Water will continue to leak until the pipes no longer contain any water. For this reason, it is wise to drain some of the water if possible. Do not do this inside your home. Instead, find one of the outdoor spigots that you attach to your hose and turn it on. This way, water is unlikely to gather more extensively inside your basement.

Collect Water From The Leak

Even If you turn on a spigot outside, you may still notice some water leaking into your house. You can and should try to reduce interior water damage by collecting the fluid or stopping the leak temporarily so the water is more apt to flow outside.

You can simply place a bucket underneath the leak or use towels to stop the flow of water. You can also use a specific plumbing device to stop the leak. It is wise to purchase a few items so you have them in your home in case of an emergency. These include epoxy putty, clamp repair devices, and flexible silicone tape. All of these devices can be used when the leak has reduced to a trickle.

You can also start cleaning up any water once the leak has been successfully stopped. If you want to get rid of the residual fluid in the area, then set up a dehumidifier or a fan in the area.
